If you’ve been told you need a dental crown, you may not realize there’s more than one way to get there. Traditionally, a crown means two office visits spread over a few weeks, with a temporary crown in between. Same-day crowns, made possible by CEREC technology, collapse that whole process into a single appointment.

How the Traditional Crown Process Works

A traditional crown starts with your dentist shaping the tooth to make room for the crown and taking an impression. That impression is sent to an outside dental lab, which custom-fabricates your permanent crown — a process that commonly takes a couple of weeks. In the meantime, you wear a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth. Once the permanent crown comes back from the lab, you return for a second visit where your dentist checks the fit, shape, and color, then bonds it permanently in place.

Traditional crowns can be made from a wider range of materials, including metal alloys, porcelain-fused-to-metal, and all-ceramic options, which gives your dentist more flexibility for complex cases, heavy bite forces, or very specific cosmetic matching needs.

How Same-Day CEREC Crowns Work

With CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics,  the whole process happens in one visit, using the CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing) system in our own office. After your tooth is prepared, we take a digital scan instead of a traditional impression. That scan becomes a precise digital design of your new crown, which is sent directly to our in-office milling machine. A solid block of high-quality ceramic material is milled into your custom crown, then polished and bonded in place — all while you wait. There’s no temporary crown, no second appointment, and no waiting on an outside lab.

Does One Last Longer Than the Other?

Not meaningfully. Dental crowns in general typically last 5 to 15 years with good oral hygiene and regular checkups, and some crowns last considerably longer with proper care. That range applies to both same-day CEREC crowns and traditional lab-made crowns, what determines how long any individual crown lasts has more to do with the specific factors below than with which process made it:

• How well you keep up with brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings
• How much bite force and grinding the crown is exposed to
• The material chosen for that particular tooth
• How precisely the crown was fitted and bonded

Is One Stronger Than the Other?

Both can be plenty strong when the material is matched to the job. Same-day CEREC crowns are milled from solid blocks of high-strength ceramic or porcelain, which hold up well for most front and back teeth. Traditional lab crowns give your dentist access to a broader range of materials, including metal and porcelain-fused-to-metal options, which can be worth considering for teeth that take heavy chewing forces or for cases needing very specific customization. In practice, the right choice comes down to which tooth is involved and what it needs to withstand, not one process being inherently sturdier than the other.

Does One Cost More?

Pricing depends on the material used, the complexity of your case, and your specific treatment plan, so we can’t quote a flat number here — that’s something we’ll go over at your visit. What we can say generally is that the cost difference between a same-day CEREC crown and a traditional lab crown tends to be modest, and for many patients the value of finishing treatment in a single visit — no second appointment, no time spent with a temporary crown, offsets any difference in price.

Is the Same-Day Process Actually Faster?

Yes, noticeably. A traditional crown typically means two visits separated by a couple of weeks of lab turnaround time, plus wearing a temporary crown in between. A same-day CEREC crown completes the entire process — prep, digital scan, design, milling, and bonding — in a single appointment, usually a couple of hours. If your schedule makes a second visit difficult, or you’d simply rather not deal with a temporary crown, that’s a real practical advantage.

Will It Look Natural Either Way?

In most cases, yes. Our CEREC system allows for precise shade matching and custom shaping right in the office, so same-day crowns blend in well with your surrounding teeth for the vast majority of patients. For unusually complex cosmetic cases, matching a very specific shade pattern across multiple front teeth, for example, a lab-made crown can sometimes offer a bit more customization, since a dental lab technician has more time to fine-tune the result. So Which One is Actually Right for You?

When comparing same-day crowns vs traditional crowns, the main differences involve treatment time, fabrication methods, convenience, and the number of dental visits required. 

Same-day CEREC crowns tend to be a great fit if you:

Q: Do same-day crowns require a second visit for any reason?

Typically no. Once your CEREC crown is milled, polished, and bonded, treatment for that tooth is complete. Your dentist will still want to see you for your normal recall exams to make sure the crown and surrounding gum tissue stay healthy.

Q: Can every tooth get a same-day CEREC crown?

Most teeth are good candidates, but not every case. Teeth needing very heavy-duty materials, multiple crowns placed together, or complex cosmetic matching sometimes do better with a traditional lab-made crown. Your dentist will tell you which applies to your tooth.
